Emma

Emma
Jane Austen
Penguin Books, 2003

First impression:
You may not be surprised to hear that this, too, is course literature, which robs it slightly of its charm. And regardless of that, my former relationship with Austen is slightly strained. I do think this will be better than Pride And Prejucice, however, and rather a quick read despite the menacing 453 pages.

Review:
I will hold the novel to be, not bad, but very drawn out, as is the trend with 19th century literature. Had I enjoyed Pride And Prejudice, I would definitely not have been disappointed; actally I appreciated this somewhat more, containing less plot and therefore fewer characters to remember. The story is in most aspects very predictable, but it is (ancient) chick-lit after all, and a suitable read for those who are amused by absurd takes romantic relationships. Taking on this brick of a book under pressure is not recommended, but for a leisurely summer pastime, my sympathies may have been won.

Rating: Decent
