Watchmen

Watchmen
Alan Moore
Illustrations by Dave Gibbons, colouring by John Higgins
DC Comics, 2005

First impression:
I'm intrigued by the graphic novel, but find myself liking the texty bits better, since they are not in the film at all. It's phony, action-packed and dramatic, and I might rise to the nerdy occasion before it's over.

Review:
Having seen the film before, I did not find it too difficult to keep up with the plot, but I fear I would have had problems if this was my first encounter with the work. It is very intricate; the longer passages of text appealed to me especially, often consisting of ficiticious newspaper articles, autobiographies and other authentic-looking documents. The visual factor, of course, creates a much different work than the classic novel. The reader is spared from an overload of adjectives, for good and bad. In any case this has opened my eyes to the comic world and I am quite curious to have a look at The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, evidently by the same writer.

Rating: Good
