The Intimate Adventures Of A London Call Girl
Belle De Jour
Phoenix Books, 2007
First impression:
I caught a glimpse of this online and was unabashedly intrigued. You may or may not know of my love of obscure literature, but this definitely fits into the category. It is quite reminiscent of Bridget Jones' Diary, although with a higher degree of truth, I suppose. Sometimes it gets a bit too chick-lit-y, but my curiosity has still been awoken.
Review:
To be quite honest, I had rather hoped for it to be filthier. Make of that what you will. At times I was surprised to be interested in the relationship issues, shoe rants and fashion tips of a woman with whom I am not acquainted, but as far as chick-lit goes, it was not nearly as bad as a lot of other material out there. I assume it has to do with the autobiographical factor; it is interesting because it actually happened, although I do question the authenticity of the diary form, which from time to time gave the impression of being too processed and revised for an emotional record of events. In any case, the book has somewhat redeemed its genre, if only until I get my hands on Marian Keyes or any of her fellows again.
Rating: Impressive
