Literature, Criticism And Theory

Introduction To Literature, Criticism And Theory
Andrew Bennett; Nicholas Royle
Pearson Education, 2004

First impression:
This book has a stunningly awful '80s front cover, but so far I am happy with its content in it being interesting, albeit sometimes drawing assumptious conclusions. I hope to find its namedropping tendencies very educating.

Review:
I am not entirely sure what one can expect from a book of that title, but I found it not altogether informative for one reason: there were far too many examples of unexplained namedropping, unjustified conclusions and unneccessary clarifications of unlikely thought patterns. For an "introduction" to literary criticism, it was incredibly abstract and occasionally even flimsy. I did enjoy some of the chapters, especially the one on "The Uncanny", but I must still say I am not impressed that two grown men cannot stick to a subject for more than two sentences without straying off and quoting Jacques Derrida. I was indeed intellectually challenged during the reading of this book, but it regrettably caused me more annoyance than pleasure.

Rating: Decent
