Xenophobe's Guide To The Swedes
Peter Berlin
Oval Publishing, 2008
First impression:
I am as ashamed of the truths which this book contains as I am impressed by its eloquence. Especially for a book written by a native Swede, it is incredibly observant and manages to seize the absurd aspects of the nation's psyche long enough to actually express them in rational terms. Not to mention its spot-on recognitional humour.
Review:
Because I am Swedish and "Swedes are always surprised to discover that foreigners to not keep a framed map of Sweden above their beds", I must recommend this to absolutely everyone, even though at times the author seemed set to put people off the greatness of our truly superior nation. On an honest note, if you should ever wish to penetrate the nature of Swedish thought, you need look no further. Some of the information was unfamiliar to me, some of it largely exaggerated, but nonetheless I was not very surprised to find it there. It's a short read, which made it worth it.
